Electromagnetic Impulses, music producer of all electronica genres, chats with Unsigned Chart.
Electromagnetic Impulses (Jason Mallett), has been producing music for ten years, having started off on his mum's keyboard back in the mid 80's. In 1996 he picked up a copy of Music 2000 for the Sony Playstation™; “I was instantly hooked on producing and creating music…”
In 2006, after learning how to structure and arrange music, he bought his first PC and immediately set to work on an impressive catalogue of tracks, formally launching on the Internet in February 2007.
Since then, Electromagnetic Impulses has written and produced over 45 tracks, and 15 collaboration tracks, found a manager, released his 2 EP's and an album, built and maintained a fan base, created a highly popular social network, launched a monthly podcast and been nominated for several awards.

“Regarding my profile on the Unsigned Chart, you will find the following tracks of mine.”
'Long Tall Man' (Featuring Pixieguts)...this is probably my tightest Drum And Bass track to date, and has had a lot of success on Last Fm.

And Body Beat, which was used in the film 'Lost Everything'.
Unsigned Chart: What got you in to making music?
Electromagnetic Impulses: Initially as a young child, I was hooked on fiddling around with my mum’s Yamaha keyboard, with a 16 track sequencer, and started laying down various riffs, all played by ear, as I can't or have never learnt to write music.
I really started off getting the music writing bug by renting a copy of 'Music 2000' on the Sony Playstation. I rented a copy for a night and ended up spending a whole 24 hours solidly writing riffs and samples, and composing my first ever track back in 1996.
Fortunately I now have a copy of those early tracks, on Cd....which I plan to use, IF I should ever make a real name for myself!
UC: What your favourite tune of all time?
E.I: This is not easy there's SOOO many great tracks out there. In honesty my favourite track is probably 'Good Drugs' by 'Alien Syndrome'
This guy is only 19 years old and really has a huge talent. He inspires me because of his young age and his amazing Psyche-Trance stompers.
UC: Where was the best gig you've ever played?
E.I Unfortunately I've not perfected the art of playing live and hence I've not had the experience. I'm still at the beginning of my journey to stardom.
UC: What's your favourite tune at the moment?
E.I: Again a hard question to answer since nearly EVERYTHING I listen to is unsigned or independent music. But at present I spend a lot of time listening to
Aberrant by Crimson Death vs FELN Featuring Pixieguts
UC: How long have you been producer?
E.I: If you include those Playstation years then I'm now in my 11th Year as a producer. BUT I've only been on-line for 2 years and only got a hold of FL Studio (my current S/W of choice) in 2004.
UC: What's your weapon of choice?
E.I: I'm still using FL Studio 5 ...but I have Ableton Live. and a new Midi keyboard...so once I have a faster PC I’m going to make the switch from FL Studio over to Ableton Live to give me more experience of playing live.
UC: What DJs influenced you?
E.I: In the early days I was hugely influenced by the likes of DJ Brisk, DJ Clarkee, DJ Seduction, DJ Vibes.
More recently I've got into my drum’n’bass, the likes of DJ Pendulum, Aproditee, I have always loved Infected Mushroom ever since I first found them.
UC: What style do you play / make?
E.I: I produce ALL styles of electronic dance music from slow house right through to banging techno and EVERYTHING in between. Basically I like to produce music that you can dance to.
UC: Were do you get your tuneage?
E.I: This varies...sometimes I collaborate with other artists that I have met. A classic example of this is my latest release 'Electromagnetic Death' which is a 6 track EP I did with the very talented DJ Crimson Death.
I have also done a lot of work with Pixieguts, who is an amazingly talented vocalist from Australia, we also plan to release an EP in 2009.
That aside, I guess I take inspiration from the mood that I'm in when I start writing a track. I find it best to write a track in one day, and coming back over the following weeks to add the finishing touches.
UC: If your music were food what would it be?
E.I: It's Betty's Hot Pot (Coronation Street a popular English TV soap') because it's off the hook!
UC: Have you made your own records / dub plates or been on compilation albums?
E.I: Not yet, but I have contact's to make that happen. It's just a matter of having the funds, which unfortunately I don't at present :(
UC: What do you hate most about producing?
E.I: Getting drunk thinking that you have produced a brilliant track only to wake up in the morning and realizing that it was rubbish, and that you'd wasted the whole night!
UC: What do you love most about producing?
E.I: I love it when you are in the middle of a track that works. At this point I have complete control over what direction to take the track in. It's like opening Pandora's Box: you can play with and manipulate the sound knowing that whatever you do, it's going to sound good.
UC: What's the maddest thing that has happened to you at a party?
E.I: The maddest thing that has happened to me...? Waking up the next morning with a plastic duck. Thinking it was something else....I'm not going to say any more than that.
Enjoy the music peeps!!
