Unsigned Chart

unsigned, fresh new breaking artists & bands...

... I met someone at a party who had a friend who was starting a site similar to unsignedchart.com

Made me ask myself - what is different about this place? How can we all make this a place that is worthwhile?

I think this place needs a clear set of mission goals and some more collective action. Am I wrong?

Hi, I thought the Unsigned Chart had a mission. A mission to develope a collective of musicians who could generate an intrest in their music from a wider audiance, without the need for sponcership and contracts form record companies, who are to hung up on making money and controlling people than allowing musicians to develope their own musical style.

I say keep on doing what you are doing, and let The Unsigned Chart stand out as a independent music collective, on its content and the activities it promotes.

Worthwhile, useful, promotional, I think I have to say at this point that we have tried several projects already in the last 6 months which have exhausted us, but I can give you a couple of reasons why in the last 6 months this site "has" been worthwhile to some artists, and at the same time why some projects have failed.

The site and ALL projects are solely funded by myself, Leigh, and Clint, we have no sponsors and as you can imagine this sometimes limits the projects we would like to bring on.

Not finished, some may say failed projects:

The TV Show has been completed but has been held up by an artist who agreed to his song being on the show but has since changed his mind and didn't want his song included. that's his choice entirely, but when we have the completed edit on the producers desk and have to tell him, sorry we can't use that as we now need to go back into the studio and re-edit a third of the show its not conducive to good promotion from us to the TV company! So the TV show has further to wait, anyone interested in having their song on the show please let us know!

Projects that have benefited artists:

We ran a competition to get one band a chance to make a promotional music video last March/April and which was won by a band called Nephu HUzzband.
Unsigned Sponsored the video and it was filmed by Simon at Atlantic Videos at a studio hall in London. The video was filmed, edited and sent to the bands producer within 2 weeks, I think the video is fantastic and captures the song completely. It has already been picked up MTV2 and its hot video list and why not take a look yourselves here >

Through the making of the Unsigned Chart show we have also managed to arrange studio time for the artist Matchstick. The studio, Deep Recordings
has excellent facilities and Mark the manager producer has worked with many artists over 20 years. keep an eye out for the outcome :)

In the Pipeline and or cancelled

We had been working on putting together a live air stage on Bournemouth Beach for this summer, 4 days of music from bands on this site during the biggest event Bournemouth has ever seen, The Bournemouth Air Show, a festival with over 750,000 people coming through it over 4 days! Unfortunately it now looks like we will have to pull out of this due to lack of sponsors.

Deep Blue FM:
We have secured a sot of two hours each Saturday on the new radio station Deep Blue FM where we will be promoting the bands from this site every Saturday, 12 noon to 2pm during August this year.

We have been in meetings with many people over the last 6 months each time trying to work on promoting artists from this site, some worked out, some didn't but I think we have done well for the first 6 months of business!

But Simon is right the site now needs a more clear idea of what it is doing, objectives need to be set down and worked on, and also more members who use the site to interact more, give people reason to come back. We have some great member pages which are attracting people to the site, but if we can get more members doing the same... well thats what its all about.

We are open to ALL suggestions and the above isn't a full list of what we have been up to and helping with, its just to give you an idea that were not sitting behind a desk waiting for the site to fill up!

I think the site works really well. You can listen to music easily and as a fan you can add tracks and build a compilation which is fun and rewarding. There is enough going on here for the bands to have a reason to sign up.

I'm just surprised that we aren't being swamped with new bands followed by fans. Is there a band here reading this that can shed some light on why we don't have 100 new bands signing up every day.

If it is just the case thatv the features that this place has are similar to other places does anyone have an idea of how we could tempt more bands in?

Personally I think we need 2000-3000 to provide a wide variety of listening?

The Baby boom Hi Si, mission goals a good idea, what do you suggest?
One idea; this involves a bit of a collective idea with the members of unsigned chart, networking to find some free venues to hold some more "Unsigned chart shows". Unsigned chart could also podcast these events live over the internet. These could happen on a monthly basis at different locations and be partially managed by members who have found such a location. Even though unsigned chart show is Keith’s baby (growing strong & well cool), we are all part of this collective and therefore these events would be in all members’ interests. It would be good for several reasons; it would give members the chance to meet up, which, by feedback and networking, would be a good morale booster, it would also create regular showcases along with many hours of potential air play material.
So, how does this garden grow? From a seed, here's one to be planted, all the best to everyone out there, the Radfax

Hi - Free Venues ! - Depending on the size of the event and time of year I think your Idea could work. I help promote Jam events in Kent and one of our venues holds outside mini festivals during the summer, we have one coming up over August Bank Holiday with 10 bands playing on the Saturday with others playing over Sunday then Jamming on the Monday. If bands need a fee then tickets can be sold but these things can be arranged if people are willing to make the effort.

I am very excited by Radfax's suggestion and the creation of this new hub. This is exactly what I was and am on about. Let's all think outside the box and come up with more radical new ideas that set the scene for unsigned music. We have to work collectively.

Sorry to hear of your woes with the T.V. show am in a similar situation blew virtually the entire 2007 budget on a short Wish You Well movie which was professionally filmed apparently many hours of footage exist but all thats ever made the public domain was a 30 second preview, oh well we all learn from our mistakes!

Hi Guys,
I think we are taking the right direction, I guess not all of us are on the internet daily and not all have the time to sign up.... seconds count in this fast pace of life!
We changed the site over to a closed site this week, similar to facebook, you can't see the profiles until you sign up or sign in. We thought that by doing so visitors will interact more with the artists, plus the artists can connect with the new members as they now have profiles! I have kept an eye on stats in case this proved a wrong move but they have gone up and people are joining up and making profiles more so I think we'll keep it this way a while and get feedback etc.

We realise that just working a site to promote music isn't enough, we could spend all day making pages on here and getting people into the site but that still wouldnt be enough so when we started off 7 months ago we knew we would also be working on offline promotions, the TV show, live events etc etc.
Yesterday we signed the contract to provide a 2 hour radio show every Saturday during August and its a full 2 hours of just us.... the guys from Deep Blue have been great, they really love the site and we managed to work a deal with no adverts on the show... wall to wall unsigned chart!
If this works out well we are also on for a slot during December so fingers crossed were working on it :)

We also looked at 2 venues for live music nights every week in Bournemouth, thats looking good also. I realise this only benefits bands local to Bournemouth but we are also hoping to get more across the UK through the group, The Cooperative Hub started by Radfax: http://www.unsignedchart.com/group/unsignedchart_cooperativehub

Thanks to all for the input here, fantastic, we listen to everything and thats probably why the chart site is so dynamic, this week alone I'm working on several new pages... keep an eye out!

We have a myspace page now, www.myspace.com/unsignedcharts so if you want to add us as a friend that would great!

Cheers!
Keith
