unsigned, fresh new breaking artists & bands...

whatever your feelings towards Tom's god-forsaken cyber-vacuum, myspace are certainly leading the way when it comes to implementing new ideas and enhancing the internet and it's uses - this article first published by Digital Music News:

MySpace users will soon be able to port their profiles onto other sites, according to an announcement issued Thursday morning. The initiative, called "Data Availability," represents a dismantling of an approach that largely positioned MySpace as a separate destination. Initial partners include Yahoo, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter, though others are expected to jump into the action. "The walls around the garden are coming down - the implementation of Data Availability injects a new layer of social activity and creates a more dynamic internet," said Chris DeWolfe, chief executive and cofounder of MySpace.

The move also positions MySpace as the ambassador profile for users, a strategy that spreads the destination beyond its usual gates. And one central change replicates across the various destinations, a convenience play that addresses seemingly-endless redundancy across different personal profiles. Additionally, users can control which aspects of their profiles travel, and which remain private and contained within MySpace proper. The initiative, which comes ahead of a massive music upgrade, will be delivered over the next few weeks.

Facebook And Google Follow MySpace Announcement

MySpace will soon allow its users to extend their profiles into a variety of different destinations, an innovative portability play. But Facebook is now expanding its own portability initiative, a move that further dismantles the walled garden approach to social networking.

On Monday, the company announced Facebook Connect, a program that allows third-party developers to extend their applications into non-Facebook environments. "This will now enable third party websites to implement and offer even more features of Facebook Platform off of Facebook – similar to features available to third party applications today on Facebook," explained Facebook member Dave Morin in an update.

And, not to be left out, Google is also pushing its everywhere model. The ever-reaching search giant has now unwrapped Google Friend Connect, an initiative that allows website owners to easily inject social networking elements into their destinations. "Websites that are not social networks may still want to be social - and now they can be, easily," the company explained.

That means easily installation of user registration functionality, member galleries, and other social goodies. The concept is an extension of OpenSocial, a network of destinations plugged into similar networking APIs. That includes iLike, which was recently planted onto Ingrid Michaelson's website, a move that brings networking and connectivity to the artist website - and broadens the iLike reach considerably.
